BodyBuilding Programs & Weight Training Program - Which One Is For You

Many of people looking for bodybuilding programs do not really know the difference between a weight training program and a bodybuilding program and get easily flown away with the term bodybuilding. Both of them though are used in same sense and often imply the same thing however are they really the same. As far as the content of websites are concerned both the terms weight training program and bodybuilding program have been used with same connotation and carry the same meaning, so when you read other of those articles do not start picking up on the word used i.e. weight training or bodybuilding program. It would be referring to the same thing. However it is quite important to understand what each of these term individually means and where they stand against each other.

Primary Objective Of A BodyBuilding Program

Bodybuilding primarily refers to the "cosmetic" or visual display of physique. Taking a look at competitive bodybuilding, bodybuilders participating in bodybuilding competitions showcase their physique to judges and are evaluated on basis of their appearances. The primary idea is to display a great physique that gets highlighted with fat loss, great muscles and proper cosmetics that may include tanning and oils. The bodybuilders participating in bodybuilding competitions are judged on basis of their appearances alone, and there is no performance based evaluation to test their strength or agility. The only thing that counts in professional bodybuilding is the best display of your physique defined as a function of muscular size, low body fat and classical symmetry.

Bodybuilding programs & bodybuilders, focuses on developing large, well defined and well proportioned muscles. Bodybuilding programs are designed with the target of achieving a certain overall body image, as a result bodybuilding programs are more intensive. They focus on developing each part of your body including your attitude towards your body. However, bodybuilding programs prime focus is not on increasing muscular strength, flexibility, endurance, agility or other things that contribute more towards athletic qualities. Bodybuilding programs focus on increasing these athletic qualities only to the extent where it meets the needs of bodybuilder on stage.

Primary Objective Of A Weight Training Program

Weight training programs on other hand focus on helping a average person develop strength that is required into daily activities such as lifting a heavy bag, moving a heavy table, bringing down a heavy suitcase from overhead shelf or opening a jammed door. Unlike bodybuilding programs, the focus on weight training is to equally improve performance, speed and stability. This is the reason why most athletes opt for weight training program and not bodybuilding programs. As athletes, their focus is not on building up huge muscles, but rather muscle and strength that lets them run faster and longer, providing more control of their golf swing, or swim faster. In general the objective with using weight training program is to help you increase your body strength and control so as to produce the most out of it while developing a muscular physique.

Bodybuilding programs on other hand are not so much focused on overall strength and the fitness level. A bodybuilder lying on beach will look as the perfectly sculptured model of fit human body. However, if he is analyzed carefully by a fitness trainer, a number of problems may be spotted depending on his posture, exercise performance or strength level. This is simply because the bodybuilding programs orient the bodybuilders towards better looks and muscles that show like arms and legs. Bodybuilding programs are not really geared towards development of deep muscles like the quadratus lumborum or transversus abdominus that strengthen and stabilize lower back and torso. The focus in bodybuilding programs as highlighted is "muscles that show".

Primary Distinctions Between BodyBuilding Programs & Weight Training Program & Is Objective

Unlike bodybuilding programs, weight training programs in general are focused on overall strength. Hence, exercises for deep muscles as well as exercises that provide stability are a core part of such training programs. This contributes to one major difference between bodybuilding programs and weight training programs: the type of exercises that are emphasized. Bodybuilding programs focus a lot on isolation movement exercises, that is the exercises that are focused on developing one muscle group at a time. Isolation exercises such as crunches train muscles to act individually. This is again as per the needs of bodybuilding where a bodybuilder may need to show the muscles in isolation for judgement e.g. arms. Weight training programs do not call for isolation exercises, at least not at an early stage. Most of the weight training programs focus on compound exercises that require many of the muscles of the body to work together, such as squats and bench press. These exercises require more than one muscle group to perform, thereby enhancing both the co-ordination and strength of those muscle groups. Co-ordination is more important consideration for athletes rather than a common person, simply speaking, it is the ability of muscles to produce smooth and efficient movement for a particular task like skating. Bodybuilding programs on other hand focus on isolation exercises that abridge the co-ordination between different muscle groups.

Can You Commit To Demands Of A BodyBuilding Program

Bodybuilding programs are relatively time consuming too. This is because of a number of reasons like isolation exercises. Since, bodybuilding programs focus on exercising one muscle group at a time, they take a considerable time in exercising the entire body over week. On the other hand weight training programs for beginners/average people tend to consume much less time. They focus on exercises like military press and squats that exercise over ninety percent of the body.

Bodybuilding programs also differ from weight training programs in their workout schedules. Bodybuilding programs focus on schedule and pattern that results in maximum gains in muscle mass. As such the number of reps are on higher side and the rest period between sets is on the shorter side. This setup however is not optimal for gaining strength & power. Weight training programs focused on building an optimal fitness level focus on heavy weight lifting for shorter reps and longer rest time.

Are BodyBuilding Programs & Weight Training Programs Miles Apart Or Is This Just Technical Distinction

It should be noted that this article compares these two types of programs by putting them at extremes. We are taking a bodybuilding program as one that is designed only keeping competitive bodybuilders in mind, while a weight training program has been assumed to be one focussing on general fitness only.

Practically, any bodybuilding program would be a kind of weight training program only with more focus on bodybuilding as described above. Similarly any weight training program even if focussing on fitness will have some basics taken from bodybuilding. Most of the weight training programs or bodybuliding programs that are being reviewed or compared on this site are for average persons and not professional bodybuilders or fitness coaches. These programs focus on getting you a good muscle mass and then as you get on to advanced level the focus shifts on giving your the best looks. However there are programs that are only aimed at bodybuilders or people who have achieved that general fitness level through these weight training programs and now want to focus on bodybuilding. Such programs can be classified as purely bodybuilding programs. Through out this website the term 'bodybuilding program' and 'weight training program' have been used as synonyms and in an interchangeable manner and one should not perceive any difference on basis of this article. This article is more to clarify the minds of those who want to understand the difference between a bodybuilding program and weight training program and take a more wise decission.

Should I Chose A BodyBuilding Program Or Weight Training Program

From the perspective of a beginner or a average person, this article should clearly his mind of the choice that he is supposed to make. If you are starting with bodybuilding or are still at a beginner level then your focus should be on achieving an optimal fitness level first. Bodybuilding programs are normally quite intensive and demand a lot time and effort. Also bodybuilding programs place a very high weightage on diet and sometimes supplements too, so they are taxing on pocket also. Weight training programs on other hand are designed keeping average people in mind who can take out 30-60 minutes a day for obtaining a great physique. Also such programs focus on developing the overall strength and fitness level too. So, it is more important for you to understand your objective from either of these programs. It is about what you want to achieve. The following pictures should help you make a better choice.

Identify Your Objective When Choosing Between Bodybuilding Program & Weight Training Program

If the above picture relates more to your dream and if that is you want to be, then go for a bodybuilding program. It shows inclination towards competitive bodybuilding and not just good physique and a purely bodybuilding program may help you achive this objective better. If you are an aspiring bodybuilder or want to be one then bodybuilding programs should be the choice for you. If the above picture relates more to your objective from a training program then you should opt for a weight training program. It shows inclination towards gaining more strength and a good physique rather than obtaining muscles that you can just flaunt. I think this is where most of the average people fit and if you are 'skinny', then this definitely may be a better place to start with.
